How Many Pages a Website Needs for SEO

6 min read

The question "how many pages does a site need to rank well" is one of the most frequently asked. And the usual answer is "the more, the better" or "10-20 for a landing page, 100+ for a shop."

Both answers miss the mark. The right answer depends not on the count, but on how many meaningful topics you have.

The core rule

One page = one cluster of queries with one intent.

It's math. However many clusters exist in your niche — that's how many pages you should have. No more (that's cannibalization) and no fewer (you'll lose traffic).

How many pages by site type
8–20
Local business
dentist, lawyer
120–6,000
Online shop
products + categories
200–500
Blog / media
over 2–3 years
15–100
B2B / SaaS
features + cases + blog
A guideline: the real number depends on how many meaningful clusters exist in your niche.

Let's look at the two extremes.

When there are too FEW pages

The most common scenario for beginners and small sites.

Example 1: a one-page site for a web-design studio.

5 pages: home, services, portfolio, pricing, contacts. The studio does 4 types of work: landing pages, corporate sites, online shops, mobile apps. All 4 types are crammed into a single "Services" page.

What happens: for the query "order a landing page" Google sees that your page mentions a landing page, but 3 other services sit right beside it. For "corporate site" — the same thing. Relevance is blurry, the page answers no single query perfectly.

The result — position 30-40 for any of those four queries. Nowhere.

The fix: split into 4 separate pages, one per service cluster. Each answers its specific query. In 2-3 months — top-10 for its own queries.

Example 2: a fitness blog.

20 articles, one per big topic: "the whole truth about protein," "how to train 3 times a week," "everything about stretching." Each article is enormous, 8,000 words, trying to cover it all.

What happens: for the query "how much protein does a woman need to lose weight" Google sees that your mega-article about protein has a paragraph on it — but there are 30 more paragraphs about other sub-questions right next to it. Competitors with a dedicated page on exactly this are in the top.

The fix: break "the whole truth about protein" into 10-15 pages on narrow topics. Each answers one specific user query. Inside the blog — navigation and links between them.

When there are too MANY pages — keyword cannibalization

The reverse scenario: you've created 5 pages of "buy a cake in moscow" (for different keywords) — and they get in each other's way.

What cannibalization is: two (or more) pages of your site try to rank for the very same query. The search engine doesn't understand which one to show, and lowers both. Sometimes one, sometimes the other lands in the top-10 — unstable.

How it arises:

  • You made a "buy cake moscow" page, then "custom cake moscow," then "buy large cake moscow" — all these queries are one cluster.
  • An old "cake delivery" page + a new "buy cake with delivery" — they overlap.
  • The shop engine auto-generates pages for filter combinations, and they overlap.

How to detect it: enter a query in Google as "site:yourdomain.com buy cake moscow" — if 2+ pages with similar titles come up, that's cannibalization.

How to fix it:

  1. Merge — keep one page, with all the keywords in the text.
  2. 301 redirects — the other pages redirect to the main one.
  3. Clear separation — if the pages are genuinely about different things, rework the title/H1 and content so each answers its own unique query.

How many pages you specifically need

A simple formula: however many meaningful query clusters you have in your niche — that's how many pages.

Rough estimates by business type:

One-page site for a local business (dentist, lawyer, hair salon)

8-20 pages. Home, a page for each service (5-15 clusters), about us, pricing, contacts, a blog (2-3 articles for authority).

Online shop

A product card for each SKU + category pages + blog.

A shop with 100 products = ~120-150 pages (products + 10 categories + 10-20 blog articles). A shop with 5,000 products = ~5,500-6,000 pages (products + ~50 categories + blog).

Here the product and category pages are generated automatically — the key is that each one has a meaningful title and H1.

Blog / media

One article per cluster. Depends on the niche: fitness — 200-500 articles over 2-3 years, finance — 300-800, local lifestyle — 50-150.

Here the count grows gradually. 30 good articles beat 300 shallow ones.

B2B services site (agency, consulting)

15-50 pages. Home, service pages (8-20), case studies (10-20), about the company, team, a blog with expert articles (5-10 to start, then regularly).

SaaS product

20-100 pages. Home, a page for each feature (5-15), pricing, integrations, use cases (5-10), documentation, a blog (growing, 20+ articles in half a year), comparisons with competitors (vs pages).

How to grow the count correctly

If you're on 5 pages now and need 50 — don't do it in a week.

Growth of 5-15 pages a month — search engines digest and index it fine. Growth of 100 pages at once on a young domain — a "mass generation" signal, easy to fall under a filter.

The strategy:

  1. First build the core — 200-500 queries.
  2. Cluster them — you'll get 30-80 clusters.
  3. One page per cluster. That's your target.
  4. Do 5-10 pages a month at good quality.

Don't count pages — count covered clusters

SEOs often measure sites in pages. That's convenient (the number is easy to see), but useless. Far more important is the metric "how many query clusters are covered by at least one page."

A 1,000-page site that covers 30 clusters (cannibalization, duplicates) gives less traffic than a 50-page site that cleanly covers 50 clusters. Inflating the number of pages is easy. Making each page meaningful — that's the actual work of SEO.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I have cannibalization?

Enter a query in Google via site:yourdomain.com query — if 2+ pages with similar titles come up, that's it. Cured by merging and a 301 redirect.

Is it worth adding a lot of pages quickly?

No. Growth of >50 pages at once on a young domain = a mass-generation signal. Safe is 5-15 pages a month at good quality.

How many pages does a one-page-style business site need?

8-20 pages: home + 5-15 services with a separate page for each + about us + pricing + contacts + 2-3 blog articles for authority.
